Autoimmune Retinopathy: A Rare But Serious Cause of Vision Loss
Gupta Eye Hospital, Panipat – Trusted Retina Diagnosis & Care
Autoimmune Retinopathy (AIR) is a rare eye disorder where your immune system mistakenly attacks the retina, causing gradual and often permanent vision loss. Because the condition is uncommon and symptoms can be vague early on, it’s often misdiagnosed or overlooked.
At Gupta Eye Hospital, Panipat, we’re equipped to identify and manage such complex retinal diseases with precision.
What Is Autoimmune Retinopathy (AIR)?
AIR occurs when autoantibodies—proteins made by your immune system—target the cells in your retina, leading to damage. Over time, this can cause severe central or peripheral vision loss, even in the absence of visible retinal damage early on.
Common Symptoms:
- Gradual loss of vision in one or both eyes
- Night blindness
- Night blindness
- Photopsia (flashing lights)
- Blind spots in the visual field
- Difficulty adjusting to light/dark conditions
These symptoms may mimic other retinal diseases, making early diagnosis challenging.
Who Is at Risk?
- Individuals with existing autoimmune disorders (e.g., lupus, rheumatoid arthritis)
- Patients with a history of certain cancers (paraneoplastic AIR)
- Middle-aged adults, though it can affect younger people too
