What Is Retinitis Pigmentosa? Symptoms, Causes & Hope for the Future
Gupta Eye Hospital, Panipat – Caring for Your Retina, Preserving Your Vision
Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) is a rare inherited eye condition that affects the retina — the light-sensitive layer at the back of your eye. It causes gradual vision loss and can lead to severe visual disability if not managed properly.
Symptoms of Retinitis Pigmentosa:
- Difficulty seeing at night (night blindness)
- Gradual loss of peripheral vision
- Tunnel vision in later stages
- Light sensitivity
- Slow adjustment to darkness
Symptoms often begin in childhood or adolescence, but progress slowly over time.
Causes of Retinitis Pigmentosa:
RP is caused by genetic mutations that affect how cells in the retina function. It can be inherited from one or both parents and may affect multiple family members. The photoreceptor cells (rods and cones) slowly degenerate, leading to vision loss.
